Hetzdorfer Viadukt
thoroughfares / Viaduct
Once the highest single-story bridge of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, today a highlight of the long-distance hiking trail between the Baltic Sea and the Saale reservoirs, the Hetzdorf Viaduct spans the Flöha Valley near Hetzdorf at a height of 43 metres. The building, which is now almost 150 years old, was completed in just 2 years. In 1868, the first locomotive drove over the bridge structure, which was the last bridge to be completed and established the railway connection between Dresden and Hof. 17 arches made of blue-grey gneiss, granite and Pirna sandstone span the Flöha valley for a length of 328 metres. The four largest arches with a clear span of 22.66 m are located in the middle of the valley. For 123 years, up to 200 trains per day crossed the bridge on two tracks at peak times – most recently at speeds of only 10 km/hour due to structural damage. In 1992, after the railway line between Oederan and Flöha had been straightened by two new prestressed concrete bridges and shortened by 1.2 km, the viaduct was taken out of service and expanded into a hiking trail. Today you can cross the building, which is now a listed building, on foot or by bike and from its center you have a wonderful view over the Flöha valley. If you want to see the building in all its beauty from above, you should not miss to visit the ´Bastei´ viewing rock on the mountain slope, which is less than 350 meters away from the north-east end of the bridge. after the railway line between Oederan and Flöha was straightened by two new prestressed concrete bridges and shortened by 1.2 km, the viaduct was taken out of service and expanded into a hiking trail.
