Feuersteinvorkommen finden sich in zahlreichen jura- und kreidezeitlichen Ablagerungen in ganz Europa. Vorkommen sind in Aachen-Lousberg, Kleinkems, Schernfeld, Osterberg bei Pfünz, Baiersdorf, Abensberg-Arnhofen und Lengfeld sowie auf Rügen zu finden. Die Feuersteinfelder auf der Insel Rügen zwischen Mukran und Prora im Nordteil der Schmalen Heide sind ein bekanntes Ausflugsziel (54 ,27 ,59 ,N, 13 ,33 ,27 ,O54.46638888888913.5575). Sie werden auch das Steinerne Meer genannt und haben eine Fläche von 40 ,ha (2000 ,m ,— ,200 ,m). Während einer Serie von Sturmfluten vor 3.500 bis 4.000 Jahren wurden die Steine, die im Laufe der Zeit durch das Meer aus den Kreideablagerungen der Halbinsel Jasmund heraus gebrochen waren, an diesem Ort angelagert. Wegen ihrer Mächtigkeit ist darauf nur spärlicher Bewuchs möglich.
