Es wurde vor allem gebaut, um den Fußballvereinen der Kölner Südstadt eine Spielstätte zu geben, die auch für die 2. Liga geeignet ist. Die gesamte dazugehörige Bezirkssportanlage Köln-Süd, so die offizielle Bezeichnung, umfasst nicht nur das eigentliche Stadion, sondern auch einen Komplex mit Umkleiden, Krafträumen und Sporthalle und zwei weiteren Trainingsplätzen. Ein Teil der eigentlichen Stadionanlage mit Tribüne gehört zur namensgebenden Kölner Südstadt (Stadtbezirk Innenstadt, Stadtteil Neustadt-Süd), die angrenzende Sporthalle und die Trainingsplätze liegen im Stadtteil Zollstock. Das Südstadion verfügt über 12.000 Plätze, davon 1.860 überdachte Sitzplätze und 10.140 Stehplätze. Nach dem Neubau des Müngersdorfer Stadions ist es Kölns größtes Stadion mit Leichtathletikanlagen, die allerdings nur sehr selten genutzt werden. Seit der Eröffnung ist es die Spielstätte des Fussballvereins SC Fortuna Köln, eines langjährigen Zweitligisten, heute in der NRW-Oberliga. Ebenso trug die zweite Mannschaft von Bayer 04 Leverkusen ihre Heimspiele in der Saison 2008/09 im Südstadion aus, da die eigentliche Heimspielstätte, das Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, im Zuge der Bauarbeiten an der BayArena nicht bespielbar war. Bis zur Saison 2005/06 trug die 2. Mannschaft des 1. FC Köln (Amateure) ihre Spiele der Regional- und Oberliga im Südstadion aus, für die Saison 2005/06 war es die Heimat des damaligen Oberligisten PSI Yurdumspor Köln. Die Spiele der Kölner American Football Bundesligamannschaft Cologne Falcons finden ebenfalls im Südstadion statt. Da die Bausubstanz nach fast dreißig Jahren stark renovierungsbedürftig ist, plante die Stadt Köln das Südstadion mittelfristig durch einen Neubau an gleicher Stelle zu ersetzen. Die Kapazität sollte für die Ansprüche der Regionalliga ausreichen, also etwa 5.000 bis 8.000 Zuschauern Platz bieten. Die Finanzlage der Stadt ließ jedoch einen baldigen Baubeginn nicht zu. Stattdessen wurden zur Saison 2008/09 und zur Saison 2009/10 Renovierungsarbeiten durchgeführt. So wurde die Tribüne im Sommer 2008 mit Schalensitzen ausgestattet. Zudem wurde auf der Haupttribüne ein abgetrennter Gästebereich errichtet. Im Sommer 2009 folgte die Erneuerung der sanitären Anlagen sowie des Flutlichts. Das Südstadion erfüllt nunmehr wieder alle Kriterien des DFB und ein Abriss bzw. Neubau ist (zumindest vorerst) nicht mehr beabsichtigt.
