Dänische und französische Gemälde aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert des Impressionismus und Post-Impressionismus ergänzen die Sammlung. Die Bestände gehen zurück auf die Kunstsammlung des dänischen Industriellen Jacob Christian Jacobsen, dessen Sohn Carl Jacobsen die Sammlung 1888 der –ffentlichkeit stiftete. Der Name leitet sich ab vom Namen der Brauerei ’ Carlsberg ’ mit den Zusätzen Neu und Glyptothek, also Skulpturensammlung. Jacobsen wählte diesen Namen aus Begeisterung für die Glyptothek in München. Für die Sammlung wurde nach dem Entwurf der Architekten Vilhelm Dahlerup und Hack Kampmann das Gebäude am Dantes Plads in Kopenhagen errichtet. Auch heute noch finanziert sich das Museum über einen Obolus, der auf jede Flasche Bier der Brauerei Carlsberg aufgeschlagen wird. Es wird darüber hinaus von der Carlsberg-Stiftung unterstützt. Zum hundertjährigen Jubiläum der Antikensammlung im Jahr 2006 wurde das Gebäude umfangreich renoviert.
