Gemessen an der über 200jährigen Geschichte öffentlicher Bilder-Galerien ist diese Kunstsammlung ein sehr junges Museum, das auf zwar nur wenig mehr als drei Jahrzehnte zurückblicken kann, aber sich zu einer der wichtigsten Adressen des kulturellen Lebens der Stadt Cottbus entwickelte. Das Museum wurde 1977 als Abteilung eines Bezirksmuseum gegründet. 1984 erhielt das Museum den Präfix "Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Cottbus". Die Kunstsammlungen Cottbus waren die dritte Neugründung eines Kunstmuseums in der DDR. Nach regionalen Gesichtspunkten wurde die Standortauswahl getroffen, denn die südöstlich von Berlin gelegene einstige Bezirksstadt war eine der wenigen, die über kein eigenständiges Kunstmuseum verfügte. Nach der Wende wurde es zum Landesmuseum und es erfolgte 1991 die Umbenennung in "Brandenburgischen Kunstsammlungen Cottbus". Mitte 2004 kam es zum der Trägerschaft, das Museum wurde, neben dem Staatstheater Cottbus, Teil der Brandenburgischen Kulturstiftung Brandenburg. Der letzte Namenswechsel fand im April 2006 in Vorwegnahme des zukünftigen Standortes in "Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus" statt. 2008 erfolgte der Umzug vom alten Standort in der Spremberger Straße ins neue Quartier des ehemaligen Dieselkraftwerks. Am 8. Mai 2008 fand Neueröffnung statt. Der neue Standort des alten Dieselkraftwerk zeichnet sich als ein von seinem bauhistorischen Wert im Land Brandenburg einzigartiges Industriegebäude aus. Allen Außenfassaden sind mit 4,6cm flachen Eisenklinker verarbeitet. Der Umbau zum Kunstmuseum fand von 2004 bis 2008 statt und bietet Ausstellungsfläche auf insgesamt 1.250 m. Die Gesamtkosten des Projektes lagen bei 8 Millionen Euro. Die Fläche teilt sich auf sechs Ausstellungsräume auf, die sich dadurch auszeichnen, dass jeder Raum eine eigene Atmosphäre bietet. Temporäre Ausstellungen finden in drei Räumen des ehemaligen Maschinenhauses statt. Drei weitere kleinere Räume befinden sich im alten Schalthaus.
