Konträre Schwerpunkte sorgen in jedem Jahr dafür, dass die Arena zu einem ganz eigenem konzeptionellen Stil gefunden hat. So sind es vor allem Künstler, deren Erfolg sich weniger an kommerziellen Kriterien, als an der Qualität ihrer Kunst messen lässt, die der KulturArena zu ihrem besonderen Ruf verhelfen. Die außergewöhnlich exponierte Lage mitten im Zentrum Jenas verdankt das Festival eigentlich einer kleinen Katastrophe. 1987 ließ der Stadtrat das Zuschauerhaus des Theaters abreißen, um einen Neubau zu erzwingen. Jedoch ohne Erfolg. Aus der Not wurde eine Tugend, aus dem Zuschauerraum der Theatervorplatz und Arenaspielort. Zu verdanken ist das Festival dem (inzwischen verstorbenen) Kulturamtsleiter der Stadt Jena, Norbert Reif, der es in Anlehnung an einen frühen Song von Udo Lindenberg (mit Titel "RocknRoll Arena in Jena") "KulturArena Jena" taufte. Die Energie und spezielle Atmosphäre des 3000 Menschen fassenden Ortes entsteht besonders durch den engen Kontakt von Künstler und Publikum. Heute zählt das anfangs kleine Festival mit jährlich circa 70.000 Besuchern zu Ostdeutschlands größten Open-Air-Veranstaltungen. Bisherige Headliner auf der KulturArena waren unter anderem: Al Jarreau, Patti Smith, Götz Alsmann, Ute Lemper, Lou Reed, John Cale, Nigel Kennedy, Marla Glen, Adam Green, Farin Urlaub, Bela B., Einstürzende Neubauten, Element of Crime, Nils Landgren, das Jazztrio E.S.T., Nina Hagen, Noa oder Hubert von Goisern.
