Heute gehören die Gebäude dem Augustinerchorherren-Stift Herzogenburg. Der Turm der Stiftskirche mit seiner blau-weißen Färbung gilt als das Wahrzeichen der Wachau. Im Jahre 1372 wurde am Platz des heutigen Stifts eine Kapelle gegründet. 1400 wurde diese erweitert und eine Krypta gebaut. Stift Dürnstein wurde 1410 gegründet. 1710 wurde Hieronymus belbacher zum Propst von Dürnstein gewählt. Er veranlasste den barocken Umbau des Stifts. Die heutige Innen- und Außengestaltung stammt von den Architekten und Baumeister Joseph Munggenast, Jakob Prandtauer und Matthias Steinl. Mit der Klosteraufhebung 1788 unter Kaiser Joseph II. kam Stift Dürnstein zum Augustinerchorherren-Stift Herzogenburg, dem es heute noch angehört. Heute beherbergt es ein internationales Begegnungszentrum. Das Kloster Dürnstein wurde 1410 von Augustiner-Chorherren besiedelt. Die Chorherren stammten aus dem böhmischen Wittingau. Im Laufe des 15. Jahrhunderts bauten sie Dürnstein zu einer gotischen Klosteranlage aus.
