Sie ist nach dem Stifter benannt. Der ursprüngliche Bau stammt aus der Zeit der Romanik und ist das älteste Baudenkmal der Stadt[1]. Die Erkenbert-Ruine liegt im Stadtzentrum zwischen der katholischen Dreifaltigkeitskirche im Westen und der protestantischen Zwölf-Apostel-Kirche im Osten. Im Süden und Südwesten schließen die Willy-Brandt-Anlage und das Rathaus an. Der aus Worms stammende Erkenbert, auch Eckenbert genannt, war ein Ministeriale des dortigen Bischofs. 1119 gründete er auf seinem 12 Kilometer entfernten Frankenthaler Landsitz ein Augustiner-Chorherrenstift mit Hospital, später kam noch ein Skriptorium hinzu. 1125 wurde die Stiftskirche durch Bischof Burkhard II. der heiligen Maria Magdalena geweiht. Im gleichen Jahr gründete Erkenberts Gemahlin Richlinde ebenfalls in Frankenthal ein Augustiner-Chorfrauenstift. Erkenbert war bis zu seinem Tod 1132 Propst des Stiftes.
