Das Kloster wurde 1232 durch Graf Ludwig II. von Rieneck und seine Frau Adelheid von Henneberg gegründet. 1568 hob das Erzbistum Mainz das ausgestorbene Kloster auf und machte es zum erzstiftischen Kameralhof. Dieser wurde 1595 den Jesuiten überlassen. 1773 wurde die Anlage der Studienanstalt Aschaffenburg zugewiesen. Später kam das Kloster in Privatbesitz. Eigentümer der Anlage ist heute der Gymnasiumsfonds des Stiftungsamtes Aschaffenburg. Er betreibt die Berufsbildungsstätte Himmelthal (BBS Himmelthal), eine gemeinnützige GmbH. Seit über 25 Jahren gilt die BBS Himmelthal als anerkannter und kompetenter Träger für berufliche Vorbereitung und Qualifizierung. Der Schwerpunkt dieser berufsbildenden, pädagogischen Arbeit liegt in der Förderung von sog. benachteiligten jungen Menschen. Zur Zeit erhalten Jugendliche ausschließlich in Förderlehrgängen mit Internat von einem multiprofessionellen Team (Meister, Sozialpädagogen, Erzieher, Lehrkräfte, Psychologin) qualifizierte Angebote, Hilfen und Unterstützung für ihre Eingliederung ins Berufs- und Arbeitsleben. Diese berufsvorbereitenden Lehrgänge werden im Auftrag des Arbeitsamtes durchgeführt.
