Sie gilt als ältestes Bauwerk der Gotik in –sterreich (lediglich der Chor in Lilienfeld ist älter). Die Kapelle wurde ab 1200 unter Herzog Leopold VI. als Palastkapelle über einem älteren romanischen Vorgängerbau errichtet und 1222 geweiht. Der Bau wurde vermutlich durch französische Handwerker nach dem Vorbild der Krönungskapelle von Reims errichtet. 1799 fiel die Capella Speciosa dem Josephinismus zu Opfer und wurde geschleift. Teile der Kapelle fanden in der Laxenburger Franzensburg Verwendung. Bereits 1953 wurden die Grundmauern der Capella freigelegt und dokumentiert, sie wurden danach aber wieder zugeschüttet. Im Sommer 2005 wurde die Capella Speciosa im Rahmen von Nachgrabungen des Bundesdenkmalamts abermals freigelegt und ist im Stift Klosterneuburg der –ffentlichkeit ab 6. ,Mai ,2006 zugänglich. In der Führung "sakraler Weg" sind auch einige Figuren der Emporengruppe zu sehen.
