Es wurde von 1874 bis 1878 unter König Ludwig II. anstelle des so genannten Königshäuschens seines Vaters Max II. erbaut. Zunächst begann Ludwig II. damit, dass er das Königshäuschen, in dem er oft mit seinem Vater Maximilian II. während Jagdausflügen weilte, nach seinen Vorstellungen ab 1869 von Architekt Georg von Dollmann umbauen ließ. Schon ein Jahr später ließ er es um den Ostflügel des heutigen Schlosses erweitern. Der Ostflügel war damals zunächst als Einzelstück gedacht, es war noch kein Anbau geplant. Dies bestand jedoch nur bis 1871: In diesem Jahr wurde der Westflügel und das königliche Schlafzimmer als Verbindungsstück geplant und gebaut. Das Schlafzimmer ist an das Schlafzimmer des französischen Sonnenkönigs angelehnt: Auch hier findet man eine Abtrennung des Bettteils vom Rest vom Raum, was erlauben würde die erste und letzte Audienz eines Tages am Bett zu halten, wie es der Sonnenkönig tat. Zu Ludwigs des Bayern Zeiten war diese Vision jedoch pass: Der König hatte kaum noch eine politische Bedeutung.
