Er entstand um 1220 als Teil der acht Kilometer langen mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung. Der Turm ist mit Erdgeschoss und vier Obergeschossen einschließlich Zinnen ca. 35 m hoch. Die Mauern des Erdgeschosses weisen eine Stärke von 2,50 m auf. Bei der Erstürmung des Bayenturms 1262 sollen die Kölner erstmals den Schlachtruf Kölle alaaf gerufen haben. Das würde die dort im Kapitel Rheinland zitierte zweite Quellenangabe zur Entstehung dieses Schlachtrufes während der Epoche des Stapelrechts belegen. Eine Kölner Weisheit sagt: Wer den Turm hat, hatte die Macht. Mit der Eroberung des Turms durch die Kölner Bürgerschaft 1262 war die Vorherrschaft des Erzbischofs endgültig gebrochen. Der trutzige, wie eine Burg ausgebaute Bayenturm ist heute eines der wenigen Zeugnisse der mittelalterlichen Befestigung, die Köln 700 Jahre lang umschloss. Im Kölner Kampf um frühe bürgerliche Freiheiten gegen Erzbischof Engelbert II. spielte der Bayenturm eine Rolle, weshalb er mit dem Wappen der Stadt geschmückt wurde. Der Bayenturm war der südliche Eckturm der Stadtmauer am Rhein. Von hier aus besaß die Rheinmauer Richtung Norden weitere 22 Tore. Neben seiner allgemeinen Schutzfunktion gegen Feinde zu Lande und zu Wasser konnte von hier aus auch der Treidelbetrieb (Ziehen von Kähnen stromaufwärts durch Pferde) auf dem Leinpfad überwacht werden.
