Die Schule gehört dem Erzbistum Köln. Die Schule wurde als höhere Privatschule für Mädchen katholischer Konfession im Jahr 1890 von der Kölnerin Regina Köllen gegründet. Zunächst wurde sie als Lyzeum nicht anerkannt. Im Jahr 1914 übergibt Regina Köllen die Schule aus Altersgründen an die Ordensgemeinschaft der Schwestern Unserer Lieben Frau. Im Dezember 1915 ergeht die Genehmigung zur bernahme der Schule in Form eines Ministererlasses der Reichsregierung in Berlin. Das erste Schuljahr unter der Leitung der Ordensgemeinschaft ist das Schuljahr 1916. Unter der Schulleiterin Schwester Maria Valeria werden 183 Mädchen unterrichtet, aufgrund der Nachfrage müssen zusätzliche Räume angemietet werden. Im Jahr 1917 erhält die Schule die Anerkennung als vollberechtigtes Lyzeum, die Schülerinnenzahl ist inzwischen bereits auf 220 angestiegen, im Jahr 1918 werden etwa 400 Schülerinnen unterrichtet.
