Von der schwer einnehmbaren Burg, die im Früh- und Hochmittelalter auf einem steil das Umland überragenden 294 ,m hohen Sandsteinfelsen errichtet wurde, sind heute nur noch Ruinen zu sehen. Hervorzuheben sind einige in den Fels hineingehauene Räume und die Ruine des Bergfrieds. Die Ruinen der neuzeitlichen Festung sind sehr eindrucksvoll. Die Burgruine Regenstein ist als Nr. 80 in das System der Stempelstellen der Harzer Wandernadel einbezogen. Urkundlich wurde erstmals 1162 der Comes de Regenstein (Graf zu Regenstein), Konrad der Sohn des Grafen Poppo I. von Blankenburg (aus dem Haus der Reginbodonen), namentlich erwähnt. Berühmt wurde die Burg vor allem durch den Grafen Albrecht II. von Regenstein (1310-1349), der in den 30er Jahren des 14. Jahrhunderts häufige Streitigkeiten mit den Regierenden der umliegenden Städte, dem Bischof von Halberstadt und der btissin von Quedlinburg hatte. Romantisch verklärt wurden diese Geschichten in der Ballade Der Raubgraf von Gottfried August Bürger (vertont von Johann Philipp Kirnberger) sowie dem Roman von Julius Wolff (Der Raubgraf).
