Die zwei bis drei Kilometer südöstlich des heutigen Korinth gelegene Anlage war die Akropolis und der höchste Punkt der antiken Stadt. Die erste Besiedlung geht bis auf die Jungsteinzeit zurück. Die Menschen wählten das hochgelegene Plateau, das durch Süßwasserquellen genügend Trinkwasser bereitstellte und die umliegende Gegend strategisch dominierte. Vom Akrokorinth aus konnten der Isthmus von Korinth und dessen fruchtbare Ebenen überwacht werden. Außerdem kontrollierten die Besitzer dieser Festung die Landverbindung zwischen dem Peloponnes und dem Festland. Die Wahl dieses Standortes stellte sich als hervorragend geeignet heraus, da die später ausgebaute Festung der Bevölkerung und ihren Herrschern bis ins späte Mittelalter diente. Ungefähr zu Beginn des 2. ,Jahrhunderts v. ,Chr. wurde die Siedlung, die sich bis zur Kultur der Bronzezeit weiterentwickelt hatte, durch eine ungeklärte Ursache zerstört. Während der mittel- und späthelladischen Periode blieb die Siedlung von Akrokorinth verlassen, wohingegen die umliegenden Siedlungen (beispielsweise Korakou und Lechaion) weiter existierten.
