Bekannt ist sie durch eine auf einem Bergkegel am Donauknie gelegene mittelalterliche Burg (im slawischen Sprachraum bedeutet vi¡e grad hohe Burg). Schon die Römer erkannten die strategische Lage des Ortes und errichteten an dieser Stelle ein Legionslager zum Schutz der Grenzen der Provinz Pannonien. Während der Völkerwanderung hinterließen Germanen, Slawen und Hunnen ihre Spuren. Bis in das 9. Jahrhundert war der Ort Teil des Awarenreiches. Zu Beginn des 10. Jahrhunderts nahmen ungarische Stämme das Land in Besitz. 1009 wurde der Ort erstmals als Komitatssitz unter seinem heutigen Namen erwähnt. Die noch vorhandenen römischen Befestigungen wurden ausgebaut und verstärkt. Nach dem Ende des Mongolensturms ließ Bla IV. die Burg Visegr¡d als Teil der Grenzsicherungen entlang der Donau umfangreich erweitern.
