Stobre hat 5.837 Einwohner (Stand 2001). Der heutige Ort Stobrec befindet sich auf einer Halbinsel, neben der sich der sich weitere Ortsteile entwickelten. Stobre wurde von griechischen Kolonisten im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gegründet. Der ursprünglich illyrische antike Ort besitzt noch Reste von griechischen Mauern, die auf eine der seltenen Beispiele einer Verteidigungsanlage aus dieser Zeit hinweisen. Später wurde der Ort als die römische Besiedelung Epetium bekannt. 1080 wird dann der Ort erstmals in einer Urkunde erwähnt. Im Mittelalter war Stobre für seine Wassermühlen und Salinen bekannt und war im 15. Jahrhundert Grenzort zwischen dem venezianischem und dem türkischem Herrschaftsgebiet.
