Die Gemeinde liegt in einer Höhenlage von 297 ,m ,ü. ,M. und erstreckt sich beidseits der Birs. Sie gliedert sich hauptsächlich in drei Ortsteile: Münchenstein Dorf, Neumünchenstein und Neuewelt/Brüglingen. Im Norden stösst sie direkt an den Stadtkanton Basel. Weitere Nachbargemeinden sind Muttenz, Arlesheim und Reinach. Die Fläche des Gemeindegebiets beträgt 718 Hektar, davon sind 56 ,% Siedlungsflächen, 24 ,% Wald, 17 ,% Landwirtschaftsgebiet und 2 ,% unproduktive Fläche. Das Wappen der Gemeinde zeigt einen schwarz bekleideten Mönch mit herabhängender Kapuze. Der Mönch ist barhäuptig, trägt rote Schuhe und schreitet mit zum Gebet erhobenen Händen auf silbernem Grund. Das Wappen entspricht dem Siegel des bischöflichen Geschlechts Münch.
