Es ist Hauptstadt der autonomen Region Friaul-Julisch Venetien und der Provinz Triest und hat 208.614 Einwohner (Stand 31. Dezember 2007). Triest ist Sitz eines katholischen Bischofs. Es besitzt zwei bekannte Observatorien für Astronomie und für Geophysik sowie seit 1924 die Universität Triest. Die Stadt ist Hauptsitz des Schifffahrtsunternehmens Lloyd Triestino (ehemals –sterreichischer Lloyd) und der Versicherungsgesellschaft Generali. Von 1382 bis 1918 gehörte Triest zu –sterreich-Ungarn und war dessen bedeutendster Hafen sowie Hauptstadt des Kronlandes –sterreichisches Küstenland (Littorale). Hier liegt auch der Pegel, auf den sich Mitteleuropas Höhen über Adria beziehen. Nach 1945 wurden die Stadt und ihr gemischtsprachiges Umland von Jugoslawien beansprucht, und sie geriet durch den Ost-West-Konflikt jahrzehntelang in eine geografische Randposition. Die Nachteile der Grenzlage und der Verlust an wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung änderten sich erst 2004 mit dem EU-Beitritt Sloweniens. Kulturell und historisch blieb Triest hingegen auch im 20. Jahrhundert ein Ort des Zusammentreffens von Kulturen, Sprachen, Ethnien und Religionen.
