Januar 2008 hatte sie 306.600 Einwohner und ist somit nach Bukarest, TimiŸoara und Cluj-Napoca die viertgrößte Stadt Rumäniens und gilt als dessen kulturelle Hauptstadt. Viele rumänische Persönlichkeiten und Künstler lebten, studierten oder arbeiteten hier. Die Stadt liegt 20 km westlich der Grenze zu Moldawien und etwa 400 km Luftlinie nördlich von Bukarest. Die Umgebung ist hügelig und landwirtschaftlich geprägt. Durch die Stadt fließt der kleine Fluss Bahlui. IaŸi wird ähnlich wie Rom die Stadt der sieben Hügel genannt, die die Stadt umschließen. Die Umgebung ist landwirtschaftlich geprägt. Nachbarstädte sind in Rumänien Vaslui, Bacu, Roman, BotoŸani und Suceava sowie in Moldawien Ungheni und Bl£i.
