Jahrhundert, nach einer über 500 Jahre langen germanischen Periode (Markomannen). Nach der Anlage zweier Burgen durch die Pemysliden im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert kamen jüdische und deutsche Kaufleute hinzu. Um 1230 wurde Prag zur Residenzstadt des Königreichs Böhmen und im 14. Jahrhundert als Hauptstadt des Heiligen Römischen Reiches zu einem politisch-kulturellen Zentrum Mitteleuropas. Die Goldene Stadt zeigt ein geschlossenes, von Gotik und Barock geprägtes Stadtbild. Prag liegt zentral im westlichen Tschechien an der Moldau, rund 40 ,Kilometer vor deren Einmündung in die Elbe. Die Entfernung zu den äußersten Grenzpunkten beträgt nach Norden rund 110 ,Kilometer, nach Westen und Süden je rund 170, nach Osten rund 320 (zur alten böhmischen Ostgrenze rund 170, jeweils Luftlinie).
