Schloss Herrenchiemsee
Sight / lock
At around 240 hectares, Herrenchiemsee Island is the largest island in Chiemsee. For centuries it was owned by the Herrenchiemsee monastery. In the 17th century, the old Herrenchiemsee Palace with 4 wings was built in the Baroque style around a courtyard with a rose garden. In 1948 the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany was worked out here by the Constitutional Convention. In 1873 the island was then bought by Ludwig II, who then built the new palace as a copy of Versailles Palace. But in 1886 there were payment difficulties and work progressed very slowly, ending the same year with the death of the king, leaving the castle unfinished. But until then it has devoured more than 16 million marks. After the king´s death, the castle was then opened to the public.
