Schloss Neuschwanstein
Sight / lock
Bavaria´s fairytale king Ludwig II began building his fairytale castle Neuschwanstein in 1868. He chose a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau near Füssen as the location. The castle, which is visited annually by 1.3 million tourists from all over the world, is the most famous castle that Ludwig II had built and is probably one of the greatest sights in Germany. (and where would Disneyworlds be without it. . . . . ) The building is strongly influenced by the works of Richard Wagner, who was admired by Ludwig II. The operas ´Tannhäuser´ and ´Lohengrin´ provided a variety of templates for different themed rooms. The ballroom, which is modeled on the Wartburg near Eisenach, is decorated with murals depicting the Parzival legend. Ludwig´s plan was, following his nature, to build a castle in the style of the Middle Ages, whose epoch he idealized in a romantic and transfiguring way. He had the idea of a kind of theater backdrop that would serve as his apartment and at the same time be intended as a homage to Wagner. The irony is that Wagner never entered this castle.
Nevertheless, the original design was within budget, both visually and financially. Only when construction began did the king´s ideas change and became richer, more pompous and therefore more expensive. Nevertheless, Ludwig financed the construction from his private assets, which, however, were not sufficient. The construction was estimated at 3.2 million marks, it ultimately cost 6.2 million marks and plunged the young king into total debt. This condition ultimately led to Ludwig´s incapacitation and his dismissal on June 10. 1886
At the time of his death on June 13, 1886, the construction work on the palace, which the king himself never wanted to open to the public, had not yet been completed. The estate administration took care of both the completion and the opening and was able to use the entrance fees to pay off the mountain of debt.
