Schloss Stolzenfels
Sight / lock
Schloss Stolzenfels (German: Schloss Stolzenfels) is a castle near Koblenz am Rhein, Germany.
Completed in 1259, Stolzenfels was used to protect the toll booth at Rhine , where ships at that time, the main means of transport for goods, had to stop and toll booth. Over the years it was extended several times, occupied by French and Swedish troops in the Thirty Years´ War and finally in 1689, destroyed by the French in the Nine Years´ War. For 150 years the ruins fell into disrepair until they were presented in 1815 as Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia from the city of Koblenz. According to the romantic tradition, prince started the reconstruction of the castle completely after 1826 as a summer residence. Assisted by the famous neo-classical architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the castle was completely remodeled in the fashionable neo-Gothic style of the time, with the aim of creating a romantic place that reflects the idea of the medieval knighthood - the architects also hosted a tournament site.
