Auvillar
Sight / Town
Auvillar. Auvillar (lat. Alta Villa) was originally a fortified Roman settlement, an oppidum. During the centuries of migration up to the 10th century, like many towns in this region, it experienced numerous invasions, notably by the Normans who sailed up the Garonne with their ships.
Auvillar has been included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
The City Gate (Tour de l Horloge) was built in the 17th century and houses a permanent exhibition on navigation on the Garonne.
The 17th and 18th century arcades in the Market Square (Pace de la Halle) have rounded corner pillars and a vaulted roof. In the middle is the particularly beautiful, circular grain market with a Tuscan colonnade.
The Church of St. Pierre is a former Benedictine priory from the 12th-14th centuries. Century. It was restored in the 17th and 19th centuries.
From Auvillar you have a nice view over the Garonne to Espalais.
