Wolframs-Eschenbach is a town in Bavaria, Germany, and is located near Nuremberg. The town has around 3,500 inhabitants and is named after the medieval poet Wolfram von Eschenbach.
The city is known for its picturesque old town with half-timbered houses and its medieval festivals, which take place every summer. Wolfram von Eschenbach´s epic !Parzival! will be performed at the festival.
The history of Wolframs-Eschenbach goes back to the 8th century, when the area was conquered by the Franks. In the Middle Ages, Eschenbach was an important trading center and an important city in the region.
In 1214, Eschenbach received market rights from Emperor Friedrich II and was made a city. In the 14th century the city came into the possession of the Burgraves of Nuremberg and became part of the Nuremberg Empire.
During the Thirty Years´ War the city was occupied and plundered several times by troops from different sides. In the period that followed, Eschenbach only slowly recovered from the destruction caused by the war.
In 1810 the city came under the rule of the Kingdom of Bavaria and was renamed !Wolframs-Eschenbach! to honor the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. The city developed into an important center of agriculture and trade in the 19th century.
During World War II the city was heavily bombed and many historic buildings were destroyed. However, after the war, Wolframs-Eschenbach was rebuilt and has developed into an attractive tourist destination in Bavaria.
