Venzone
Sight / Town
Venzone is a town with almost 2300 inhabitants in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The place was almost completely destroyed by a severe earthquake on May 6, 1976. The tremors reached such an intensity that they were classified as destructive to devastating. In the first few days after the disaster, a salvage committee organized the salvage of the movable cultural assets. Venzone was badly affected, but not wiped out. An aftershock on September 15, 1976 caused the complete destruction of the old town, the fortress walls and the cathedral. The population formed a citizens´ committee in 1977 and demanded the complete restoration of the village. It was decided not to simply replace the destroyed houses, but to put all the rubble back together exactly as as they were in place before the disaster. In order to be able to implement this project, photos of the site were collected in order to be able to identify individual pieces of the wall lying around. Furthermore, it was decided not to install new facades in the successfully reconstructed places. Only the places that could not be restored from the rubble were provided with a facade. Thanks to this decision, visitors to the site can now get an idea of the human achievement that the people of Venzone made in the course of the reconstruction of their site. Large parts of the cathedral could also be reconstructed in this way, the bare pieces of wall inside and outside show the losses. In the open town hall palace, a photo documentation reminds of the catastrophe and the reconstruction.
