Kloster Benediktbeuern
Sight / monastery
The Benediktbeuern Monastery is a former Benedictine abbey that is now an institution of the Salesians of Don Bosco. It is located in the foothills of the Alps near Lake Kochel and belongs to the Diocese of Augsburg. The monastery was founded in the 8th century and has a rich history dating back to the early Carolingian period. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful monasteries in Upper Bavaria.
The Benediktbeuern Monastery was founded as an early Carolingian in the 8th century. Its first beginnings are shrouded in darkness; there is no founding document. According to chroniclers from the 11th century, the monastery was built in 740 by the noble brothers Lantfrid, Waldram and Eliland.
As early as the Carolingian period, the monastery had an important writing room. The first great period of prosperity was ended by the Hungarian raids in 955. The monastery was destroyed and almost all the monks were killed.
A major fire in 1248 caused severe damage. Other monasteries helped with the reconstruction. Abbot Ortolf II was elevated to the rank of imperial prince in 1275.
