Timoleague Friary
Sight / monastery
The Timoleague Friary, a former Franciscan monastery, was founded around 1400. The modest abbey church was enlarged around 1500 by the Bishop of Ross and today you can still see the tower that was also built. Important members of the Irish and Norman families of Courcy are buried here in the old churchyard in front of the monastery. In 1642 the monastery was burnt down in an attack by English troops under Lord Forbes. The monastery is almost entirely in ruins. Well-known English poetry from the 19th century repeatedly deals with the history of the ruins.
