Stiftskirche St.Gallen
Sight / Kathedrale
Collegiate Church of St. Gallen The Collegiate Church of St. Gallen was built between 1755 and 1766 on the foundations of a church building dating back to the 9th century AD. It has been the cathedral of the diocese of St. Gallen since 1824. After several renovations in 1773 (subsequent installation of scaffolding for the dome), 1805 (relocation of the abbot´s throne and conversion of the high altar to the community altar), 1824 (new ceiling paintings), 1841-1845 (renovation of the east facade), 1866-1867 (interior renovation ), 1928-1939 (exterior renovation) and 1960, the collegiate church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. The collegiate church has two characteristic 68 m high towers on the east front. Inside, the frescoes on the ceiling of the 100 m long church are particularly impressive, lavishly and sweepingly designed confessionals, magnificent rococo altars and a lavishly designed choir stall. The collegiate church is open for viewing daily (outside service times).
