Köln, St.Mariä Himmelfahrt
Sight / church
St. Mariä Himmelfahrt, the largest church in Cologne at the time, is one of the most splendid religious buildings of the Jesuit order in Germany. The foundation stone was laid in 1618, the fittings were completed shortly after 1630 and the ceremonial consecration took place in 1678. Destroyed almost to the ground during the Second World War, the church was restored to its original form between 1949 and 1979. st The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an important early baroque work of art that incorporates Romanesque and late Gothic stylistic elements. She impresses with her monumentality, which extends to almost all of her accoutrements, e.g. B the high altar, the pulpit, the two-storey side wings, etc.
