Köln, St.Maria in Lyskirchen
Sight / church
The church was first mentioned in 948 in a document by Archbishop Wigfried of Cologne and in 1135 (ecclesia Lisolvi). From 1180 the sacristy of the church was built on top of the wall during the construction of the Cologne city wall Around 1200 the new east building of the first church was completed, after which the old nave was removed and rebuilt. Around 1250 the painting of the nave vault, the most important part of the Romanesque church interior, was created. The church was partially baroque-styled in the 17th century as a result of repeated renovations, and the Romanesque fan windows in the galleries were replaced by round-arched tracery windows. 1860/65 a new furnishing begins again: a new high altar (designed by Vincenz Statz) and stained glass for the apse windows, as well as altars in the choir chapels are made. late 19th century At the end of the 19th century, a number of baroque details were changed again, and the late Romanesque frescoes were restored. After the destruction during the Second World War in 1942/43, the church was restored between 1947 and 1962. The restoration of the vault paintings (all older overpaintings removed) took place in 1972-1977.
