Köln, St.Gereon
Sight / church
In the 4th century a monumental building was erected on an oval ground plan. Its basic shape is clearly recognizable in the central building of the church and its masonry is still preserved in today´s building. Archbishop Anno had a long choir with a crypt below it built as the first extension of the ancient oval building and was able to consecrate the choir in 1069. Under Archbishop Arnold von Wied (1151 - 56) the old long choir was lengthened and raised. This included repainting the long choir and the new apse. Remnants of it have been preserved under the baroque furnishings to this day. The erection of the Decagon in the early 13th century is the last outstanding phase of construction of the collegiate church. After the long and high choir were added to the antique oval building, this almost 900-year-old central building now takes center stage. In the 2nd During World War II, St. Gereon was severely damaged by fire in 1942 and by cluster bombs in 1944. The restoration lasted until 1989.
