Basilika San Francesco
Sight / church
The basilica of San Francesco is decorated in the upper and lower church with important Renaissance paintings, including those by Giotto di Bondone. It was severely damaged in an earthquake on September 26, 1997 and restored at great expense.
The basilica is located at the western end of the town of Assisi, directly on the slope of the Monte Subasio mountain range. This secluded area was once the site of executions, popularly known as Colle d´inferno (´Hell´s Hill´). Francis wanted to be buried here, in memory of Jesus, who also died at a place of execution (Golgotha) outside the city walls of Jerusalem.
The construction of the basilica began in July 1228, the year Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis. , who had suggested the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and laid the foundation stone himself on July 17, 1228. St. Francis, who had already died in Portiuncula on October 3, 1226, was initially buried in the Church of San Giorgio (on the site of today´s Church of Santa Chiara, dedicated to St. Clare).
The Basilica of San Francesco, like the other Franciscan pilgrimage sites in Assisi, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
