Castillo de Santa Catalina

The Castillo de Santa Catalina is a fortress in Cadiz, Spain, built on the orders of King Felipe II to protect the city from attacks. The fortress was built after attacks by English privateers such as Francis Drake and Robert Devereux. It is the oldest military structure in Cádiz and was declared a Cultural Asset in 1993.
The fortress was also the place where Mexican independence fighter Mariano Abasolo was imprisoned. The Castillo de Santa Catalina is of historical importance and offers a unique insight into the city´s history.
Visitors can tour the Castillo de Santa Catalina and enjoy beautiful views of Playa de la Caleta Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The fortress is a fascinating relic from Cadiz´s history and definitely worth a visit.
