Beginenhof in Brügge
Sight / building
The Beguinage in Bruges is one of 26 surviving Flemish beguinages and is located in the old city center of the Belgian city of Bruges on the Minnewater. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was founded in 1230 by a foundation from Joan, Countess of Flanders. The beguinage flourished in the 15th century, running its own farm and brewery and accepting single women from wealthy families for a fee. A well-known event was the wedding of Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian I of Austria in 1477. The beguinage was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. The place offers peace and reflection and is home to restaurants, shops selling Belgian chocolates and the Minnewater, a narrow river that runs through the courtyard. The beguinage can be visited and has a museum that presents the history of the farm. The Church of Our Lady with Michelangelo´s Madonna of Bruges is located near the Beguinage.
