Teatro Romano
Sight / excavation
The Teatro Romano in Malaga is an important Roman theater located in the cultural heart of the city, right at the foot of the Alcazaba, probably the most important building in Malaga. It was built in the first century BC under Emperor Augustus and was used until the third century AD. The Arabs used parts of the theater to build the nearby Alcazaba in the eighth century. The theater remained hidden underground for many centuries and was only rediscovered in 1951. Today it is an important archaeological site and one of the city´s main attractions. It is of historical and cultural interest and is visited by many people. The theater has a modern interpretation center that teaches visitors the history of the ruins and their subsequent excavation.
The Teatro Romano is part of an archaeological project that aims to explore its ancient roots and allow residents and tourists to explore and experience history. Since 2002, a new visitor center in the form of a pavilion with an area of 172 square meters has been part of the project. This center serves to collect and present the results of archaeological research in a form accessible to a wide audience and to support research.
