The Messel Pit in Messel, Germany, is a disused open-cast slate mine that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 as the first German natural monument. The fossil deposit provides unique information about the early evolution of mammals and documents the history of the earth´s development 48 million years ago. Several 10,000 fossils from the Eocene period have so far been recovered from the maar volcanic lake, which was formed 48 million years ago. With over 40,000 finds, the Messel Pit is one of the world´s most productive sites for a wide variety of fossils and a unique document of dramatic changes in the biosphere in past geological eras.
The Messel Pit is the first of Germany´s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It has an eventful history of around 350 million years and provides insights into the development of the earth and the evolution of mammals. The finds show that around 48 million years ago, a lush jungle grew in the area, in which, among other things, ancient horses ran around.
