Ammersee
Sea /
The Ammersee is a lake in Germany, located in the southwestern region of the Bavarian capital Munich. It lies at an altitude of 533 meters and has a maximum depth of 81 meters. The lake was created by the melting of glaciers during the Ice Age. It is fed by the Ammer River, which flows out of the lake as Amper. Lake Ammersee is part of the old Celtic amber trade route that led to the Brenner Pass. The word !ammer! is a form of !amper!, which is derived from the Celtic *ambra, which in turn comes from the Indo-European *ombh-, *mbh- !wet, water!.
The region around Lake Ammersee is a popular holiday destination in Germany. The landscape has already attracted artists from the cities of Munich and Augsburg to Lake Ammersee. The lake is the third largest of the Bavarian lakes and yet is still relatively little known compared to Lake Starnberg with its royal history. The Ammersee region offers a diverse landscape with a wide range of leisure activities, including water sports, outdoor recreation and cultural activities.
The history of the Evangelical Church on the western shore of Lake Ammer began in the fall of 1511. Martin Luther probably traveled to Bavaria for the first time on his journey from Wittenberg to Rome and also visited the western shore of Lake Ammer. The Protestant fishermen on Lake Ammersee have long been part of the region´s history.
The Ammersee is also a place for various leisure activities such as sailing, fishing and beach holidays. There are also opportunities for windsurfing and other water sports. The region also offers a variety of accommodation options, including hotels, holiday apartments and bed and breakfasts.
