The State Historical Museum (Statens Historiska Museet) in Sweden, also known as Historiska Museet, is the national Swedish museum of archeology and ancient history. It is located in Stockholm and was founded in 1866.
The museum houses over 20 million items from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages in Sweden. It is subordinate to the State Historical Museums Authority and has several permanent exhibitions. These include the Gold Room, which houses a rich collection of gold and silver objects from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages. There is also an exhibition on prehistoric times, which takes visitors through different time periods using eight life stories. Another exhibition is dedicated to the Vikings and highlights both their lives and the image of the Vikings in history.
The State Historical Museum is part of the central museum authority Statens historiska museer (SHM), which also includes the Royal Armaments Museum, the Economic Museum, Skokloster Castle, the Hallwyl Museum and the Tumba Papermill Museum.
The museum is easy to reach and offers free entrances.
