EL-DE-Haus
Museum /
The EL-DE House in Cologne is the former headquarters of the Gestapo and now serves as a Nazi documentation center. It was rented by the Nazis in 1934 and used as the headquarters of the Secret State Police. The building surprisingly survived the bombing of Cologne in World War II, while 90% of the city was destroyed. After the bombing, the basement rooms of the building, which had previously been used as prison cells and torture rooms for Forced laborers and political opponents were used, used to store war files and paperwork. Inscriptions that were made by inmates on the walls of the prison cells can still be viewed today.
It houses a permanent exhibition entitled !Cologne under National Socialism!, which deals with political, civic and social life in Cologne during the Nazi era. The exhibition opened in June 1997 and offers a comprehensive look at the city´s history during this time.
The NS Documentation Center in the EL-DE House covers around 2,800 square meters and was opened in 1988. It is an important memorial that helps keep the memory of the crimes of National Socialism alive and educate visitors about the horrors of that time.
