Museum /
Museum in memory of Fritz Reuter, probably the most popular Low German poet.
Formerly Stavenhagen´s town hall, where Reuter´s father worked and lived as mayor for almost 40 years, the museum was founded in 1949 and gradually expanded in 1954 and 1960.
Today, the museum houses an extensive collection of Reuter´s manuscripts, documents and Material witnesses of his time and a specialist library with a stock of around 15,000 volumes.
In 2001 the entire house was renovated, the rooms were redesigned and many technical details changed. The permanent exhibition, which was also completely renewed in 2001, clearly and vividly documents the ups and downs in the life and work of the great Mecklenburger. Manuscripts, paintings by Reuters hand, Contemporary documents and objects from Reuter´s possession can be viewed in a modern literary exhibition. Visitors can choose from the many audio documents, some of which are historical. There are also five stations for children - för mi - and since 2009 a film cabinet with many Reuter films. An outside elevator, also for wheelchair users, leads to the second, the main floor. Reuter friends from near and far are happy to be guests in the beautiful house, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of northern German life in the 19th century, let themselves be acquainted with the Mecklenburg mentality and Low German literature in guided tours, lectures and readings and with a Language that gained attention and appreciation beyond the German borders through Fritz Reuter
