Jerpoint Abbey
Church / monastery
Jerpoint Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery. The monastery is one of the most important of its kind in Ireland. Founded in 1158, the Abbey is situated on the banks of the River Arrigle, in County Kilkenny. Many of the farm buildings and rooms are still recognizable today, so a visit to the abbey provides a unique insight into the everyday life of the monks. Jerpoint Abbey was dissolved in 1540 and the 2,000 acre estate passed to the Earl of Ormonde. There is a small visitor center with an exhibition on the Abbey.
