Mainstockheim, St. Jakob
Church / church
In ancient times there were two independent churches in Mainstockheim: St. Gumbertus in Oberdorf and St. Jakob in Unterdorf. In 1482 the two communities were merged. In 1817 the Gumbertus Church was sold and converted into a residential building. The old bell tower on the house in Gumbertusgasse was preserved. The small bell invites the residents of the upper village to church services in St. Jakob´s Church. The evangelical St. Jakobs-Kirche in Mainstockheim got its current size between 1719 and 1721. Based on an old letter of indulgence from 1451, it can still be determined that the first building of the St. Jakobs-Kirche already existed before 1451. The St. Jakobs-Kirche in Mainstockheim is part of a former fortified church that probably dates back to the 14th century. In the gateway of the old sexton´s house (16th century) you can still see an earlier loophole. Shortly after the Thirty Years´ War, the parish received its first altar Bible (1650). Reformation-minded pastors soon moved up in Mainstockheim. The first evangelical preacher, Ambrosius Frischeisen, came here in 1528.
