Kathedrale von Elgin
Church / Kathedrale
The 12th-century Elgin Cathedral is one of the finest ruined churches in Scotland. The Earl of Buchan burned the cathedral in 1390 because he had been excommunicated by the bishop after separating from his wife. Further destruction and looting followed during the Reformation in the 16th century. Only the two transepts and the east facade with two rows of arched windows have survived. The south-west and north-west towers have been renovated and can be accessed. The premises serve as a museum.
