Er entstand nach einem Entwurf des Architekten Heinrich Wenck, wurde am 11. Dezember 1911 eröffnet und befindet sich im Südwesten der Innenstadt im Bereich ehemaliger Wallanlagen am bergang zum Viertel Vesterbro. Der Bahnhof liegt neben dem innerstädtischen Vergnügungspark Tivoli. Gegenüber des Hauptportals, an der Vesterbrogade, steht die 1797 errichtete Freiheitssäule, die an die Aufhebung der Leibeigenschaft in Dänemark erinnert, und das von Arne Jacobsen gebaute SAS Royal Hotel. Das Empfangsgebäude dieses Durchgangsbahnhofes befindet sich nördlich quer über den Gleisen, die unter dem Bahnhofsvorplatz hindurchgeleitet werden und durch einen Tunnel in Richtung Helsingr verlaufen. Dadurch entsteht im Stadtbild der Eindruck eines Kopfbahnhofes. Die Tunnelstrecke wird neben den Zügen nach Nord-Seeland auch vom S-tog-System befahren. Die wichtigsten Fernverkehrsstrecken (–resundverbindung, Vestbanen und weiter nach Fredericia, Vogelfluglinie) erreichen den Hauptbahnhof jedoch von Süden.
