Gewaltige Berge ragen aus dem Wasser zu beiden Seiten und erinnern an einen norwegischen Fjord. Das berühmte Rütli, die Wiege der Eidgenossenschaft, liegt am nördlichen Ende des Urnersees. In seiner Nähe ragt der Schillerstein aus dem Wasser. Das Ostufer ist geprägt durch die Axenstrasse, wo auch die Tellskapelle liegt. Der Urnersee ist wegen des Föhns und der im Sommer wehenden thermischen Winde ein Paradies für Windsurfer.
