Es liegt am Ende des Donaudurchbruchs zwischen Sauwald und Mühlviertel bei Aschach an der Donau. Die –sterreichische Donaukraftwerke AG begann 1959 mit dem Bau der Stauanlage. Nach 5-jähriger Bauzeit wurde 1964 das zweite österreichische Wasserkraftwerk an der Donau seiner Bestimmung übergeben. Seit 1999 wird die Staustufe von der VERBUND-Austrian Hydro Power AG betrieben. Die 398 m lange Stauanlage staut die Donau bei Stromkilometer 2.162,67 auf einer Länge von 41 km bis zu einer Höhe von 15,3 m auf und bildet damit die größte Fallhöhe aller österreichischen Donaukraftwerke. Der Inhalt des Stauraumes beträgt ca. 114 Mio. m, das Stauziel liegt auf einer Seehöhe von 280 m.
