Es ist das Heimstadion des Bundesligisten SK Austria Kärnten und für 22.000 Personen konzipiert. Als Austragungsort der Fußball-Europameisterschaft 2008 konnte es kurzfristig 32.000 Zuseher aufnehmen. Weitere Teile des angrenzenden Sportparks sind ein Ballsportkompetenzzentrum, eine Fußballakademie, Kletterwände, Ruderbecken und eine Leichtathletikanlage. Das Wörtherseestadion wurde 1960 erbaut und diente dem damaligen fußballerischen Aushängeschild Klagenfurts, der Austria, als neue Heimstätte, nachdem der ehemalige Heimplatz dem Ausbau des Messegeländes zum Opfer fiel. Das Stadion, ein lang gezogenes Oval mit niedrigen Tribünen und einer Laufbahn vor dem Spielfeld, beflügelte den Klub: gerade erst aus der Landesliga in die Regionalliga aufgestiegen, konnte man 1962 bereits A-Liga-Fußball im Wörtherseestadion sehen. Mit drei Unterbrechungen und zwischenzeitlichen Abstiegen in die Zweitklassigkeit war die österreichische Liga Stammgast im Wörtherseestadion, zu Glanzzeiten vor vollen 10.000 Zuschauern. Nach dem Abstieg 1989 der Klagenfurter Austria, die bald nur noch in der viertklassigen Landesliga spielte, kam der langsame Niedergang des Sportplatzes. Einen letzten Höhepunkt bildete das erste österreichische Länderspiel in Kärnten, am 17. August 1994 gegen Russland, am 24. Juli 1998 fand hier auch noch der Supercup statt. Erst nach der Schöpfung des FC Kärnten aus der Klagenfurter Austria und dem Villacher SV kam wieder Leben ins Stadion, nach dem Bundesligaaufstieg 2001 wurde das Wörtherseestadion sogar noch ausgebaut und die Kapazität auf knapp 11.000 Zuschauer erweitert. Der überraschende Abstieg 2004 beendete jedoch abrupt dieses letzte Hoch.
