Die beiden Kirchtürme sind in weiten Teilen der Stadt sichtbar. Das Bauwerk wurde an der Stelle der davor erbauten Kathedrale aus dem 12. Jahrhundert erbaut, die beim Einfall der Tataren in die Stadt zerstört wurde. Es wurde der Jungfrau Maria und den beiden Königen Stephan und Ladislaus geweiht. Im 13. Jahrhundert begann Bischof Timotej Geld für die Finanzierung des Neubaus der Kirche zu sammeln. Im 15. Jahrhundert wurden Architekten und Bildhauer aus Prag beauftragt, die Kirche neu zu gestalten. Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts eroberten die Osmanen weitläufige Gebiete Bosniens und Kroatiens, so dass die Kathedrale mit einem Verteidigungswall umgeben wurde. Von diesen Mauern blieben einige Teile erhalten.
